While considering possible apocalyptic novels to read, I remembered reading a novel in the late 70s that I enjoyed. It has no purpose to serve in a primitive agrarian communism. Hearing my wife groan over the constantly poorly written scenes and female characters was the Greek Chorus to this dreck.

He died of a heart attack at his home La Malmaison in Grosrouvre near Metle. Now, that’s a good post-apocalyptic study right here and I have to think a while before I can review it.

It is his personality that makes the book work IMO.

The pages leading up to the actual mallevil disaster are more about the personality and background of the main characters. It really makes you think about what life would be like if you were one of mele few to survive the apocalypse. Self-sufficiency is a “good thing” and the modern pre-apocalyptic world is bid good riddance – with a few nods to such conveniences as sewer systems, various vaccines and central air.


I read Malevil over 40 years ago and was impressed at that time. We are given snipets of information about the participants in the survival, but the greatest part of the book is dedicated to the emotional, physical, and yes, the spiritual survival of the members. I have only kicked two books across the room after finishing them in disgust. Nobody would want to live through such a thing, but humanity prevails and ultimately the story malfvil on an optimistic note.

The remaining pages read like a poorly mwlevil how-to manual providing painfully dull detail of fortifying your 12th century French castle after a nuclear event.

Like Frank’s classic there is a feeling that Merle is romanticizing the “good old days” just a little though and ,like Frank’s novel, Merle’s characters are very lucky.
